The "Hamster Van"
Our 1995 Ford Econoline Van, has reached her mechanical limits. It is no longer cost-effective to repair and maintain the van. She will be towed away today so we are now looking for another vehicle. :( We use the vehicle to transport animals, pick up donations, and run errands. Keep us in mind if you have or know of anyone who has a cargo van or truck suitable for the shelter.
Septic System Failure 2/1/10
When this shelter was built, none expected we would be housing so many animals. Our septic system failed due to the amount of water from cleaning kennels, doing laundry and dishes, and bathing animals. A diversionary system was being put in when the workers hit frozen ground. The project is stalled until the ground thaws. That explains the piles of dirt in the back yard. Without a septic system we must take our laundry to the laundromat, spray kennels only 1-2 times a week and reduce bathing of animals. Unfortunately, you will find that the animals and building will not be as clean and shiny as we like. We pride ourselves on having clean, healthy, happy animals and we look forward to an early spring so that we can repair the system and get back on track :) Thank you for your continued support and understanding!
Microchips...
Microchips have arrived and are available for purchase with dog or cat adoptions. The cost is $15.00 and includes the microchip, entry into 24 PetWatch National Database and peace of mind knowing your new companion has permanent identification.
What is companion animal micro chipping all about?
A microchip is a rice gain-sized transponder, on which a unique number is embedded. The microchip is inserted using a needle between the shoulder blades of dogs and cats, in a relatively painless procedure, which takes just seconds. We estimate that approximately 5% of dogs and cats in North America have been implanted with a microchip. Traditionally, pets have been microchipped for three reasons:
1. By pet owners concerned that their dog or cat might become lost and, as a result, want to have something more than just a collar tag as a form of identification;
2. By breeders wishing to maintain breed integrity and want something more than a tattoo; and
3. By shelters, who want to improve the chances of lost pets being reunited with their owners, and to help track those pets that are adopted should they at some future date re-enter the shelter community.
